TECHNICAL DRAWINGS AND ARCHIVES – COMMUNICATING, ENHANCING, PRESERVING

This talk is an opportunity to delve into the prolific world of Christophe Gevers, an important figure of Belgian design and interior architecture. We’ll be discussing the role of drawing in design and interior architecture, as well as another of Christophe Gevers’ main mediums: models.

Models and drawings are tool of work and mediation that Christophe Gevers has seized upon with fervor and ardor. They reflect his vision, meticulousness and deep talent for turning a place into functional, user-friendly space. Giovanna Massoni, curator of the exhibition Christophe Gevers, l’architecture du détail, and Thierry Belengercollector and expert on 20th Century Belgian design,will discuss the role of these drawings and models in Christophe Gevers’ creative and transmission process, as well as their contribution to the practice of design and architecture.

Giovanna Massoni is an independent curator and consultant working in the fields of design and visual arts and the curator of the exhibition Christophe Gevers, the architecture of the detail at the Design Museum Brussels (11.10.2023 to 10.03.2024). Since 2006, she has collaborated with Belgian federal institutions to organize, communicate and curate exhibitions during Milan Design Week under the Belgium is Design label. Between 2012 and 2018, she was artistic director of RECIPROCITY, the International Design Triennial for Social Innovation in Liège (BE). In September 2021, as part of Milan Design Week, in collaboration with Belgium is Design, she curated The object becomes. – a film directed by Alexandre Humbert, which continues its journey through international festivals, such as MDFF 2021 and the New York Architecture and Design Film Festival 2021-22. Finally, she curated Au charbon ! Pour un design post-carbonean international exhibition presented at CID Grand-Hornu (25/09/2022 to 08/01/2023).

Thierry Belenger is a collector and expert on 20th-century Belgian design. While working on the exhibition Le bon et le mauvais goût at the Fondation pour l’architecture in 2002, he met Christophe Gevers. This meeting let to the idea of producing an exhibition on him (Inventaire d’un inventeur, Fondation pour l’architecture, 2008). Following Gevers’ death in 2007, and in agreement with the family, Thierry Belenger received his archives in order to preserve them and ensure the visibility of this major figure in Belgian design. In 2007, in response to the urgent need to collect traces and testimonials of the great Belgian designers of the past century, he founded Archives Design Projects. The aim of the association is to showcase the wok of Belgian designers and architects with a strong human approach, where the small personal stories enhance the big story.
