The monographic exhibition devoted to Zéphir Busine (Gerpinnes 1916 – Mons 1976) will present his work as a designer and decorative artist.

Although he is best known for his pictorial work, described as lyrical abstraction, he was also active in many other creative fields. In the aftermath of the Second World War, reconstruction during the “Trente Glorieuses” provided an abundance of work for artists and craftsmen in terms of restoring or rebuilding a heritage devastated by the bombings. Along with others, Zéphir Busine thus had the opportunity to extend the range of his talents.

From the 1950s to the 1970s, he was in turn an illustrator, ceramist, sculptor, stained glass artist and decorator. He also had the opportunity to collaborate with the architect Jacques Dupuis, notably for Expo 58, but also for furniture and religious art ensembles.

In 1957, invited by the Boussu glass factory to renew its image, he designed new product ranges of astonishing modernity and formal purity, some of which were awarded the Signe d’or in 1960 by the Design Centre in Brussels. When the collaboration with Boussu came to an end in 1970, Zéphir Busine explored a new path, that of graphic design, which he taught at the Mons Academy of Fine Arts until his death in 1976.

The ambition of this monograph is to reveal a work that is still little known to the general public and its impact on the history of design in Belgium.
