In constant research in her Brussels studio, Isabelle van Oost creates lighting from recycled plastics. Born in 1960 in Rio de Janeiro, she studied scenography at ENSAV-La Cambre. Designer, painter, scenographer and visual designer, she shares her professional career between Belgium and Brazil. For more than 35 years, she has been designing her lamps from various materials such as fiberglass, glass and metal. Today, she designs her lights from the recovery of our everyday plastic objects (cake molds, colanders, funnels, …). This aesthetic approach leads her to play with shapes, colors and translucency of materials. Her interest in plastic materials and everyday objects echoes the Plastic Design Collection, which shows the different and diverse creations of plastic design that have changed both our home and the urban environment since the 1950s.

Through her creations, she invites us to take a fresh look at this material and these objects. Inspired by Art Nouveau and Art Deco architecture, comics but also the Foire du Midi and the market of the Place du Jeu de Balle/Vossenplein, her creations reveal a Brussels anchorage. Isabelle van Oost plays with shadows, lights and transparency to create lamps, a kind of suspended architecture: towers, pagodas or floating cities. Her new collection O V N I S, inspired by ovoid forms, is presented for the first time at the Design Museum Brussels.
